News sources report that according to a study by the non-profit Trust for Public Land Off-leash dog parks are the fastest growing segment of city parks.
There were 569 off-leash dog parks in the 100 largest cities in 2010. This is a jump of 34% in 5 years.
The study showed that all public park spaces except swimming have grown in size and number.
Portland, Oregon has the highest per capita dogs parks at 5.7 dog parks for every 100,000 residents. It appears that the dog lobby has some serious backing and people feel part of their tax dollar should be spent to accommodate their furry friends. Dog lovers appear to be very passionate and actively campaign for urban spaces. Many argue that the spaces have become much more than a dog park but a way for people to socialize and even business network.
