A 4-year-old dog owned by a woman named Jane Nolan was saved Monday afternoon after it was decided Scarlett was not a pit bull but a ridge-back-boxer cross.
The pit bull isn’t actually considered a breed of dog in Canada, but the term is used to ban breeds like Staffordshire bull terriers or even dogs resembling them. That makes it hard for vets to identify them. (Did you know our dog iPhone app includes an encyclopedia to look up information on over 400 dog breeds?)
The legislation has led to the euthanasia of over a thousand dogs, even though many of them were not aggressive towards other animals or people. Data show the overall number of dog bites has not changed since the Act was put in place.
Also Scarlett has no history of aggression. The dog was found shivering in a park in February four years ago. Nolan and Scarlett were separated for a year-and-a-half and were only allowed weekly half-hour visits, after the poor dog escaped into a neighbor’s yard. Scarlett is now home and back to her playful self, says Nolan.
